Griffin showing off a new 6’0 Kookumber.  I’ve been more and more stoked on getting back on a Kookumber, recently.  I haven’t had one in a few years… about time to return to an old favorite.  Photo: Oden

Weekend + Waves // Griffin NK

We just finished and boxed-up a big order of surfboards for Surf System France… so we went for a celebratory surf on Friday morning.  Here’s Griffin, excited to get some sunshine and waves, after weeks of hard work.  This is the 5’0 Secret Menu Quad that he and Cam screen-printed the cloth for, a little bit ago.  Tom Green joined the surf-party and snapped water photos.

Griffin NK // Mr. 3000

Griffin is about to do hand-shape #3,000 of his career.  His serial numbering started with #1001, so if you happen to run across #4000, you’ve stumbled upon hand-shape 3k by Mr. Griffin Neumann-Kyle.  Coincidently, if you subtract 1,000 from the serial number on your Almond Surfboard, you can figure out, sequentially, which number board you are currently holding. Talking Surfboards // Cyrus Sutton

Griffin, Cam and I Met up with Cyrus to talk surfboards on Friday… get a new Cy’s Aquatic Almond in the works for him… and a little something new for Summer. Intense surfboard conversations either need visual references, or excessive hand gestures and surf reenactments.  For the sake of time and accuracy, we went with visual references. This one is a Lumberjack that’s headed to France next month.

Griffin NK // The Great Pacific Ocean

Griffin and Cameron teamed up this weekend for a surfboard/art project, with the end result being a new 5’0 Secret Menu Quad for Griffin. Cameron recently invested in some basic screen printing equipment, in order to do some limited edition art projects (more on that later). Cam printed a repeating pattern of “The Great Pacific Ocean” artwork that he did recently. He then headed up to Waterman’s Guild to shoot some photos of Griffin shaping his new Secret Menu. Griffin opted to do this board start-to-finish, since it was his personal board.

After the board is shaped, the printed fiberglass cloth gets laid down, like a deck patch. Griffin laminated the board clear, hot-coated it, and then gave it a final sand to get the board ocean-ready. It’s very rare that Griffin will do a board from start to finish, so it was nice for he and Cam to add a special touch to this one.
