Surfer+Craftsman // Woven Button-Up

A couple years ago, we had several chambray work shirts made up in Santa Ana- with wood buttons and a pencil slot. The idea was to make a shirt that we all at Almond would wear all the time, and reflected the Surfer + Craftsman ideal.  When we sat down to design the latest apparel collection, we wanted to keep this piece in the line as an Almond staple. This time around however, more thought was put into the details- we improved the fabric, added some single-needle stitch detailing, quilted elbow patches, and Corozo buttons. We wanted to design a shirt that guys would be proud to own for many years; something that was more than just a fashion piece. Making all our apparel in Los Angeles has been a very rewarding experience; as we are able to see the piece develop from start to finish, as well as build relationships with the craftsmen and women making the garments.  Proud to present the new Surfer+Craftsman Work Shirt.

Talking Surfboards // Cyrus Sutton

Griffin, Cam and I Met up with Cyrus to talk surfboards on Friday… get a new Cy’s Aquatic Almond in the works for him… and a little something new for Summer. Intense surfboard conversations either need visual references, or excessive hand gestures and surf reenactments.  For the sake of time and accuracy, we went with visual references. This one is a Lumberjack that’s headed to France next month.

Krochet Kids International // SS’13

Just to forewarn you, this post is going to be link-heavy.  Our pals over at Krochet Kids asked Scotty and I to model for their Spring/Summer Look Book.  Verdict is still out on whether it was some twisted joke that they asked us to be their male models.  Fortunately/Unfortunately the KKI dudes already know that I have a blanket “yes” policy on anything they need help with.  It was fun to goof off with those guys for the day.  Braedon Flynn shot photos, which turned out nicely, as always.  Take a look at their new stuff, and if you have any doubts about the sincerity of their program, read this

This is a photo Cam snapped of Jake a few weeks back. Jake is riding Aaron’s Cy’s Aquatic Almond board, and wearing his girlfriend’s wetsuit. If you know Jake at all, you aren’t surprised by either of those two things. I can say that because Jake is probably sliding his brains out on a 300-yard-long righthand point somewhere in Morocco right now.  Here’s Jake on a 30-foot long left in Newport Beach, CA.

Pete Tresselt // Surfer+Craftsman

In early 2006, I was 19-years-old, and shaping my first surfboard.  Never intending to surf the board, only wanting to hang it on the wall, I drew up plans for a 6’5 solid-Balsa single fin with five redwood stringers.  I really had no idea what I was getting myself into, but I knew I wanted to take my time.  My grandparent’s life-long compadre, and dear family friend, Pete recently had his early-60′s Balsa Hobie restored, so I figured it would be worth a quick trip to Laguna to visit Pete and see his Balsa board. I hoped to glean some inspiration and tips in the process, however Pete went above and beyond. After I spoke to him, he called his friend Terry Martin and asked if he could bring me by.  I was ecstatic… Terry was possibly the most incredible surfboard craftsman in history…and certainly one of my favorites (and Griffin’s also).  Coincidentally, Terry was working on a pair of Balsa longboards the day I went down.  I spent a couple hours talking to Terry and “The Fly” as he worked. Terry was more than gracious enough to talk me through the basics of shaping Balsa, and how different it was from shaping foam.  My time with Terry was memorable, helpful and inspiring… my only regret is that I didn’t bring a camera.

Flash forward to last week: Cameron, Chad and I made a trip to the Tresselt’s house in Laguna to do a proper interview with Pete, and hear some of his priceless surf stories.  Pete lived in Makaha in the 1950′s and shared a Quonset hut with some very familiar names in surf history. (more on that later).  He later bought his first lobster fishing boat from Renny Yater.  He still has that 1963 Hobie Balsa D-Fin hanging in his living room.

Video interview and a small write-up is in the works, but here is a little preview of what is to come.  Some of my favorite photos Cameron has ever taken, of a man who has been more helpful and inspirational to me that he knows.

Cam has been experimenting with some more screen printing in his free time recently.  He printed a limited run of these “Bottle of Stoke” posters that he designed.  Each one is tea-stained, 2-color printed, and individually numbered.  Here are a few behind the scenes photos of the posters coming to life.  They’re available online, as a limited-run of 21.

5’4 Mailbox // Twin + Trailer

The Mailbox is a model that has previously been exclusive to Japan, but we’re making it available to all markets this year.  The small trailer fin really helps smooth out any chatter that you would typically expect from a twin fin fish.  Particularly felt when the board is pushed through a turn, it completes turn much more smoothly and fluidly… with a touch more control.  Small and full-bodied, The Mailbox is sure to become a favorite in the Almond lineup.

Griffin NK // The Great Pacific Ocean

Griffin and Cameron teamed up this weekend for a surfboard/art project, with the end result being a new 5’0 Secret Menu Quad for Griffin. Cameron recently invested in some basic screen printing equipment, in order to do some limited edition art projects (more on that later). Cam printed a repeating pattern of “The Great Pacific Ocean” artwork that he did recently. He then headed up to Waterman’s Guild to shoot some photos of Griffin shaping his new Secret Menu. Griffin opted to do this board start-to-finish, since it was his personal board.

After the board is shaped, the printed fiberglass cloth gets laid down, like a deck patch. Griffin laminated the board clear, hot-coated it, and then gave it a final sand to get the board ocean-ready. It’s very rare that Griffin will do a board from start to finish, so it was nice for he and Cam to add a special touch to this one.
